A complete, well-organised file is one of the best ways to avoid delays or a refusal. Every country has its own rules, but most student visa applications ask for the same core documents. Use this checklist to start preparing early.
The core documents
- A valid passport. Check that it will remain valid for your whole stay.
- Your offer or acceptance from the institution. Each country names this differently: a Letter of Acceptance (Canada), Form I-20 (USA), a CAS (UK) or a Confirmation of Enrolment (Australia).
- Proof of funds. Bank statements and supporting documents showing you can pay tuition and living costs. Sponsors may need to provide their own documents.
- Academic documents. Transcripts, degrees and certificates from your previous studies.
- English language test results. Such as IELTS, PTE or TOEFL, depending on what your institution and visa accept.
- Statement of purpose. A clear explanation of why you chose this course, this institution and this country, and your plans after graduating.
- Photographs that meet the embassy's size and background rules.
Documents that are often needed
- Medical examination or tuberculosis test results, where the country requires them
- Police character certificate
- Proof of tuition fee payment or deposit
- Gap explanation if there is a break in your studies or work history
- Experience letters if you have worked
Common mistakes to avoid
- Funds that suddenly appear in a bank account without a clear source
- A statement of purpose that is generic or copied
- Documents that contradict each other, such as different dates or name spellings
- Missing translations for documents not in English
