Study in Canada from Lahore: Costs, Steps and Timeline

Study in Canada from Lahore: Costs, Steps and Timeline

Canada is still one of the most popular choices for students in Lahore, and for good reason. You get a world-class degree, the right to work while you study, and a clear path to work experience after graduation. But the process has changed a lot in the last two years, so it pays to plan properly.

This guide walks you through every step, in the order we follow with our own students in Lahore.

Step 1: Choose the right program and intake

Canada has three main intakes:

  • September (Fall): the biggest intake, with the most programs and scholarships.
  • January (Winter): a good second chance, with fewer programs.
  • May (Summer): limited, mostly at colleges.

Start by deciding between a university degree (3 to 4 years for a bachelor's, 1 to 2 years for a master's) and a college diploma or postgraduate certificate (1 to 2 years, very career focused). Our students have studied at the University of Waterloo, Brock University, University of Windsor, York University, Durham College, St. Clair College and Centennial College.

Step 2: Check the entry requirements

Most programs ask for:

  • Your academic results (Matric and FSc or O and A Levels for undergraduate; your bachelor's degree for postgraduate).
  • An English test score: IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or another accepted test.
  • A statement of purpose, and for some programs a resume and reference letters.

Step 3: Apply and get your offer letter

Apply 8 to 12 months before your intake if you can. Popular programs fill up early. Once you accept an offer and pay the deposit, the college or university issues your Letter of Acceptance.

Step 4: Get your Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)

Since 2024, most study permit applicants also need a Provincial Attestation Letter from the province where they will study. Your college or university usually arranges it after you pay your deposit. Do not file your visa without it.

Step 5: Prepare your proof of funds

You need to show you can pay your first year of tuition plus living costs. Canada sets a minimum amount for living costs (currently over CAD 20,000 for a single student) on top of tuition. Many students show part of this through a GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) from a Canadian bank. Always check the current figure on the official IRCC website before you file.

Your bank statements, the source of the funds and your sponsor's income all matter. This is where most refusals start, so get it reviewed before you apply.

Step 6: Apply for your study permit

You apply online through IRCC, then give your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at the visa application centre. Processing times change through the year, so file as early as you can once your documents are ready.

Step 7: Before you fly

  • Book accommodation for at least your first month.
  • Get your medical exam if asked.
  • Carry your Letter of Acceptance, PAL, proof of funds and port of entry letter in your hand luggage.

What does it cost?

Costs depend on the city and the program, but plan for:

  • Tuition: roughly CAD 15,000 to 35,000 a year at colleges, and more at universities.
  • Living costs: rent, food and transport, which are higher in Toronto and Vancouver than in smaller cities.

Part-time work helps with living costs, but you should never plan to pay your tuition from it.
