The UK is a favourite for students from Lahore who want a top degree in less time. Most bachelor's degrees take three years and most master's degrees take just one. Here is how the UK student visa works, step by step.
Step 1: Get an unconditional offer
Apply to your chosen universities, usually through UCAS for undergraduate courses and directly to the university for postgraduate courses. The main intakes are September and January, and some universities also offer a May intake.
Once you meet all the conditions of your offer (results, English test, deposit), the university makes it unconditional.
Step 2: Receive your CAS
Your university then issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). This is a reference number you need for your visa application. Universities often run a credibility interview before issuing a CAS, so be ready to explain why you chose that course and university.
Step 3: Take your TB test
Students from Pakistan need a tuberculosis (TB) test certificate from an approved clinic. Book it early, as appointments in Lahore can fill up during peak season.
Step 4: Show your funds
You must show your first year's tuition (minus any deposit you have paid) plus living costs for up to nine months. The monthly living cost amount is higher for London than for the rest of the UK. The money must be in the account for 28 consecutive days before you apply. Check the current amounts on the official UK government website, as they are updated from time to time.
Step 5: Apply online and give biometrics
You apply on the UK government website, pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, then book a biometrics appointment at the visa application centre. Keep copies of everything you upload.
English tests
Universities accept a range of tests, including IELTS Academic and PTE Academic. Some universities accept other tests or waive the test for students with strong English results. Check what your university accepts before you book.
Working during and after your studies
- During term: most degree students can work up to 20 hours a week.
- After graduation: the Graduate Route lets you stay and work in the UK after your degree. It is currently two years for most graduates, and the UK government has announced plans to shorten it, so check the latest rules when you plan.
Common reasons for refusal
- Funds not held for the full 28 days.
- Unclear source of funds.
- Weak answers in the credibility interview.
- Missing or inconsistent documents.
