The students who get the best universities and scholarships are usually not the ones with the highest marks. They are the ones who started early. If you are in Grade 12 in Lahore, whether in FSc, ICS, A Levels or another program, here is the timeline we recommend for a September intake.
15 to 18 months before your intake: explore
- Think about what you want to study and the careers it leads to.
- Shortlist two or three countries. (Our guide to choosing the right study destination can help.)
- Talk to your family about budget early. It shapes every decision after this.
12 to 15 months before: plan
- Shortlist 6 to 10 universities across different levels.
- Check entry requirements, deadlines and scholarships for each one.
- Decide which English test to take. (See IELTS vs PTE.)
10 to 12 months before: prepare
- Prepare for and take your English test.
- Start your statement of purpose. Good SOPs take several drafts.
- Ask teachers for reference letters well before your exams begin.
- Make sure your passport is valid for your full course.
8 to 10 months before: apply
- Submit your applications, including UCAS for the UK if you are applying for an undergraduate course.
- Apply for scholarships. Many close earlier than the course deadline.
- Keep a simple spreadsheet of every application, login and deadline.
5 to 8 months before: offers and funds
- Compare your offers and accept the best fit.
- Pay your deposit to secure your place.
- Start arranging proof of funds. Some countries need the money in your account for a set period before you apply for your visa.
3 to 5 months before: visa
- Receive your final documents from the university (such as a CAS for the UK or a Letter of Acceptance and PAL for Canada).
- Complete any medical or TB tests.
- Submit your visa application and give your biometrics.
1 to 3 months before: get ready to fly
- Book accommodation.
- Book your flight once your visa is approved.
- Attend pre-departure briefings, and pack your important documents in your hand luggage.
What if I am already late?
Do not panic. Many countries have a January intake, and some programs accept late applications. The sooner you start, the more options you have.
