IELTS vs PTE: Which English Test Should Pakistani Students Take?

IELTS vs PTE: Which English Test Should Pakistani Students Take?

One of the first questions students in Lahore ask us is: "Should I take IELTS or PTE?" Both are widely accepted, but they suit different people. Here is a simple comparison to help you decide.

The basics

IELTS Academic

  • Format: on paper or on computer, with the speaking test done face to face with a real examiner.
  • Length: about 2 hours 45 minutes.
  • Results: usually within a few days for the computer test.
  • Scoring: bands from 0 to 9.

PTE Academic

  • Format: fully on computer, with your speaking recorded into a microphone.
  • Length: about 2 hours.
  • Results: usually within 2 days.
  • Scoring: from 10 to 90.

Which countries and universities accept them?

  • UK: most universities accept both. For some visa routes and courses you need the UKVI version of the test, so check before you book.
  • Canada: colleges and universities widely accept both.
  • Australia: both are widely accepted for study and visas.
  • Europe and the USA: acceptance varies by university. Many accept IELTS, and a growing number accept PTE.

Always check the exact test and score your university asks for on its website before you book.

Choose IELTS if...

  • You are more comfortable speaking with a real person than into a microphone.
  • You prefer writing by hand (on the paper test).
  • Your chosen university or visa route only accepts IELTS.

Choose PTE if...

  • You are comfortable with computers and typing.
  • You need your results quickly to meet a deadline.
  • You find a face-to-face speaking test stressful.

Preparation tips

  1. Take a practice test first. Find out your starting level before you pick a date.
  2. Learn the format. Many students lose marks simply because they do not know the question types.
  3. Practise speaking out loud every day. Record yourself and listen back.
  4. Work on time management. Both tests are timed tightly.
  5. Book early. Test dates in Lahore fill up before the main application deadlines.
